What's available on this site?

On this site you can browse or keyword search a large and continually expanding selection of pictures, photos, editorial cartoons and Toronto Star pages - currently - from our digital archive. Approximately 150 new images are added each week. You will not find, however, images from wire services (e.g. CP, AP, Reuters, Getty) freelance photographers, or privately owned photos.  [^to top]

Why can't I buy a print of a sports event or a celebrity on your site?

Due to copyright and other rights restrictions, it is usually not possible for us to sell reprints photos of professional sports or entertainment events for personal use.  [^to top]

Why can't I find the photo I want?

There may be several reasons.
  • The photo you are looking for may not have been taken by a Toronto Star photographer. We can only sell photographs taken by Toronto Star staff (except for photos taken prior to 1949). You will not find any images from wire services (e.g. CP, AP, Reuters, Getty) or freelance photographers.

  • The photo may not yet have been added to our web site. Our print archive houses almost 1 million images and although we are digitizing older photos and adding them to this site each week, it will be a long time before all of our photos can be viewed online! Please contact us if you would like us to search for a specific photo.

Why do all the photos say "Toronto Star" across the centre?

This is an electronic copyright watermark. Any photo you purchase or license will not have this watermark.  [^to top]

How do I search for a phrase in the Search box?

Please refer to our Search Tips page.  [^to top]

A Toronto Star photographer took my picture but it was not published in The Star. Can I still purchase a copy?

Can I purchase an image published in an older issue of the Toronto Star that is not on your website?

We may have the image in our archive if it was taken by a Toronto Star staff photographer, however, we would need to conduct a manual search to locate the photo. Our research fee is $25 per half hour. There is no guarantee we will be able to locate the image. If the photo is not found, a reprint of the entire page on which the photo was published is usually available for purchase.  [^to top]
